"The Artist" Co-Star is Generating Oscar Buzz

If you caught the Golden Globes this weekend, you know who Uggie is. He's the Jack Russell Terrier and co-star of "The Artist," which picked up awards for Best Comedy and Best Actor at Sunday night's telecast. Despite all of the celebrities strutting down the red carpet, Uggie was the talk of the Golden Globes.

Nevermind the fact that a black-and-white silent film won the Best Comedy Golden Globe, an impressive feat. The talk of Hollywood on Sunday night was Uggie, the adorable co-star who put on a show during the awards ceremony. When the film won its Best Comedy award, Uggie trotted on stage, enjoyed a few treats from his handler, and even played dead, much to the audience's delight.

Now, Uggie is generating Oscar buzz. A Facebook page has launched, Consider Uggie, which is pushing for Uggie to receive an Academy Award nomination for his performance in "The Artist." Even if he doesn't land an Oscar nomination, though, he's being lauded for his performance. He's landed multiple nominations for the first annual Golden Collar awards, the Oscars of the dog world. Uggie is up against himself in the Best Dog in a Theatrical Film category; his performances as Queenie in "Water for Elephants" and Jack in "The Artist" were honored.

Hollywood has suddenly become more dog-friendly than ever thanks to Uggie, the breakout star of this awards season. As a dog lover, it's fun to see one of our furry friends get this kind of attention -- not to mention Oscar buzz. It's not very often that you could see George Clooney go up against a Jack Russell Terrier for an Academy Award, but thanks to the Consider Uggie campaign, it's possible.
